Personal agents are here. Here’s what businesses need to do.

Personal AI agents are changing how consumers interact with businesses. People are sending them to book appointments, compare offers, request refunds and cancel subscriptions on their behalf.

We believe this is the biggest shift in consumer AI since ChatGPT. Meta’s Muse became the top free iPhone app in the US within ten days. It also outpaced ChatGPT’s first 12 days of iOS downloads in the US and Canada.

At telli, some of our customers are already seeing higher total contact volumes and more subscription cancellations. Businesses need to prepare for this now.

The reason is simple. A customer who has put off canceling an unused subscription can ask an agent to handle it. A refund that felt too small to chase becomes worth pursuing. Comparing providers takes less effort. Customers can act on decisions they previously left for another day.

For businesses, that creates both pressure and opportunity. If a customer is staying only because canceling is a hassle, that revenue is vulnerable. But a request that previously went unspoken is also a chance to fix a problem, offer a better option or win new business.

Businesses should prepare to serve these agents as representatives of their customers. Three things matter:

  1. Make it easy for agents to reach you. Today, personal agents often navigate websites, open chats or call support. A direct connection can make the same task quicker and more reliable. Emerging standards such as Personal Agent Protocol are creating a common way for agents to find businesses, sign customers in and request access.
  2. Be clear about what the customer has authorized. A business needs to know whom an agent represents and what it can do. Permission to check a subscription should not automatically allow cancellation. The customer grants authority; the business applies its policies and checks whether an action is allowed.
  3. Complete the work and confirm the result. Changing a booking means checking availability, applying any fees, updating the reservation and sending confirmation. Your business needs to own that process. If the request needs a person, pass along the context. If the agent tries again through another channel, recognize the request and avoid doing the same thing twice.

At telli, this is the direction behind our Personal Agent Gateway. We’re shaping a common way for personal agents to connect with businesses across phone, website and APIs, with customer permissions, business rules and context carried through the interaction. Our focus is helping businesses handle the request and complete the work in their existing systems.

Businesses can start with the tasks customers ask for most often. Understand where agents are already appearing, decide which actions they can take, and measure whether those requests are resolved. The standards will continue to develop; customers are already changing their behavior.
