The warm days of mid-August mean that fresh flavorful berries are at the peak of their season, so it's prime time to treat yourself to bright, juicy strawberries, raspberries and blueberries at your local farmers market, and then whip up a tasty smoothie for a summer treat.

You can boost the nutrients with the addition of a little Omega 3 oil and California almonds. Both will add to the flavor in a subtle way, but disappear into the mix and be virtually undetectable.

Mixed Berry Smoothie
 
Ingredients
1 banana
1 cup strawberries, remove hulls and cut each strawberry in half
2 strawberries, hulls on, cut halfway through from the point toward the stem
1/2 cup raspberries
1/2 cup blueberries
1 - 7 oz. container 2 percent plain yogurt
1 tbsp. local honey
2 tsp. Omega 3 oil, such as flax or hemp
2 tbsp. California almonds
1/4 cup fresh orange juice

Method

Place almonds in the container of a blender and grind until fine.

Add all other ingredients to the mixture except whole strawberries and blend until smooth and creamy.

Pour mixture into two tall, chilled glasses; garnish each with a whole strawberry on the rim; and serve.
