How can I resize my pictures before uploading them?

If your computer has photo editing software, you can easily resize your images yourself. Instructions for resizing photos will differ depending on your software, but these general guidelines may help:

  1. Open your photo-editing software program
  2. Go to the File menu and select Open
  3. Find the picture file you want to resize and select it
  4. Now that your file is open, you need to find out how large it is. Select the Image Size option (often found in the Image menu)
  5. Set the Resolution of your image (sometimes referred to as DPI for Dots Per Inch) to 72
  6. If your image still isn't under 1 megabyte, change the Width of your image to something smaller (e.g. 500 pixels, 4 inches, etc). Make sure the Aspect Ratio (sometimes displayed as "Constrain Proportions") option is selected and locked before changing the picture width
  7. Now save your file in JPEG format (.jpg) by clicking the Save As option in the File menu
  8. You should be able to add the resulting file to your page without any problem

Other Options
If you don't have photo-editing software, but you have an image scanner, you can still resize your images using the resizing and resolution features of your scanning software.

If you are using a digital camera to take pictures, put the quality setting on low. This will usually create an image file that is already small enough to add to your page.

If your computer doesn't have photo-editing software or an image scanner, it may be necessary to have your images resized at a local desktop publishing facility such as Kinko's.
