Marin Landscapes

SAN RAFAEL, CA--January 6, 2010-- Ken Smith, a professional photographer working in the Bay Area for over 20 years, presents more than 30 color and infrared photographs in his one-person show, "Marin Landscapes" at the Red Barn art gallery at Point Reyes National Seashore. With a keen and sensitive eye, Ken meticulously photographs the unique beauty of the landscape and farms of Marin County. The places may be off the beaten track or familiar landmarks shown from Ken's perspective and provoking one viewer to comment, "Ken shows me what I miss seeing on my own." As a Marin landscape photographer, he was invited to have a solo exhibit at the Red Barn art gallery at Point Reyes National Seashore, which is dedicated to showing art relating to the National Seashore and its surroundings. His initial sojourn into the environs of Marin County was to document the families and their farms for the 2007 book, Marin Farm Families: Stories and Recipes, a joint project of the Marin County Community Development Agency's Countywide Plan and Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT). Meeting these families, visiting their farms, and exploring the natural landscape continue to serve as inspiration for Ken as he carries his camera into the hills and back roads of Marin County, the Bay Area and beyond.

An early adopter of digital photography, Ken has perfected the art, capturing a broad range of colors and tones, which he then maximizes in the computer darkroom for dramatic effect. Ken is also fascinated by the infrared spectrum and explores its parallel world of a more ethereal nature, unseen by the human eye, but visible to the infrared camera.

The Exhibit and Sale dates for Marin Landscapes is February 9-March 30, 2010. The Artist Reception is open to the public on Sunday, March 21, 2010, 1-4 pm. The Red Barn is an historic structure, originally built in the 1870s and upgraded in 2001. The new interior functions as both art gallery and a highly utilized meeting room.
