Akademos.com was founded in March 1999 by Brian Jacobs, then a professor of political philosophy at Cornell University. Its purpose is to use new media and models of distribution for the benefit of students and faculty in higher education throughout the world.

Akademos.com intends to grow a successful business through facilitating and contributing to the democratization of educational resources available via the Internet in two fundamental ways:

We will make core instructional materials like textbooks and courseware available to students at unprecedented discounts over traditional college store retail prices.
We will provide supplementary educational content to further enhance the learning process. These materials will be in the form of lectures, notes, and other course-specific electronic publishing.
We believe this dual approach to university teaching will benefit students and faculty worldwide.
